On the night of February 27 to 28, 1933, the building was set on fire. The guilt of the young Dutch councillor, Marinus van der Lubbe, was never proven. The Nazis perceived the event as a communist plot and launched a campaign of terror and pressure on political parties opposed to them, starting with members of the Communist Party of Germany. The German parliament now unites in the Krolloper (Opéra Kroll). It was on the palace's facade that the Soviet army raised a red flag on May 2, 1945, when Berlin was captured, marking the end of the World War II and the Battle of Berlin. The famous photograph of the event was retouched to remove one of the two watches, the one on the right wrist of the officer supporting the soldier carrying the flag, a supernumerary watch suggesting that it had been stolen.
