The Nuremberg Trial Memorial
On November 20, 1945, the trial against the leading war criminals began in the courtroom of the Assize Court at the Palais de Justice in Nuremberg. There, before an international tribunal, 21 Nazi leaders had to answer for their crimes against peace and humanity. A further 12 trials followed, between 1946 and 1949, before American military tribunals.
The importance of the trials, due to their significance for the evolution of modern international criminal law, made the room 600 famous the world over. The Nuremberg principles derived from the decisions of the International Military Court today form the foundations of Hague international criminal law.
They clearly reveal a profound change in attitude since 1945 46 towards those who bear responsibility for the fate of peoples.
On the very sites where the trials were held, the permanent exhibition introduces visitors to the historical context, the course of the trials and their subsequent impact. Audio and filmed historical documents bring the hearings vividly to life.
