The transit camp at the former "Lieutenant-General Dossin de Saint-Georges" barracks in Mechelen (Mechelen in Dutch, Mecheln in German), in Belgium, was opened by the Germans on July 27, 1942 to concentrate Belgium's Jews for deportation to the death camps. German: SS Juden Sammellager Mecheln. The previous month in June, all Jews had to wear the yellow star and thousands rounded up and sent to forced labor for the Todt organization. Then Heinrich Himmler set a quota for Belgium of 10,000 Jews to be deported to the extermination camps, prompting the security police to set up this transit camp.

It was located between the two largest concentrations of Jews in Belgium (Antwerp and Brussels) and was ideally connected to Belgium's dense rail network. In all, 24916 Belgian Jews (44% of those residing in the country) and 351 Gypsies would transit Mechelen for deportation to Auschwitz. To these must be added 520 Jews from Nord-Pas-de-Calais, victims of the roundup of September 11, 1942.
