Martyrs of August 8, 1944
On August 8, 1944, aGerman column coming from Saint-Pol-de-Léon and retreating to Brest crossed the commune at night around 3 a.m.; as it passed through the village of Cléder, some inhabitants cheered them on, believing it to be an American column; the Germans then fired in all directions at the houses and inhabitants, leaving one wounded.
Another German column, coming from Tréflaouénan, under the pretext of having been attacked by resistance fighters, at Toulbrout, burns crops and sets fire to and blows up houses, and takes five people in otage who are gunned at close range (the victims are Louis Le Duc, François Thépaut, René and Jean-François Roué, Hervé Hélard) ; these same troops, in the village of Pen-al-Land Kerizur, between Tréflaouénan and Cléder, also burn crops and a house, and kill Claude Roué.
Then, in the town of Cléder, seven other people, including the principal and three teachers, as well as two maids and the son of one of them, a 15-year-old teenager, are taken hostage at the Brothers' school and one of them, brother Pascal Le Borgne, is shot in the back of the neck ; the other six hostages are led, on foot, hands raised throughout the journey, kicked and beaten as soon as they lower their arms, to Plouescat where they should have been executed, but are finally freed on the orders of a German officer.
During the journey, at Coas ar Bandu, Germans rape and then kill Mme Quiviger, then her eldest son who ran to hear her scream; the Germans fire cannons at the village of Creachavel, killing one of the inhabitants, Falhun. At around 11:30 a.m., another German column crosses the village of Cléder, seizes two wounded men being treated by Dr. Le Méhauté and shoots them on the road to Plouescat.
Russian soldiers based in Plougoulm took part in the exactions. These massacres claimed a total of 13 victims, 11 natives of Cléder, one from Plougoulm, one from Sibiril
