Berghof
The Berghof was Adolf Hitler's second home. It was located in the Obersalzberg, a mountain in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden. After the Wolfsschanze, his eastern headquarters in East Prussia, the Berghof was the place where Hitler spent most of his time during the war. Earlier, from 1927 to 1936, he spent more than half the year in his Alpine hideaway. British Lancasters bombed the Obersalzberg on April 25, 1945. The Berghof was partially destroyed in the raid. On the following May 4, four days after Hitler's suicide and faced with the advance of Allied troops into the region, the SS set fire to the villa. A few hours later, the American 3rd Infantry Division arrived in Berchtesgaden, accompanied by a unit of the French 2nd Armored Division. As the Americans had only captured the town of Berchtesgaden, the French took the opportunity to attack the Obersalzberg, where the Berghof was located. In his Jeep, Captain Laurent Touyeras and his driver, Brigadier François Borg, overtook the self-propelled vehicles of the 2nd DB, which were struggling to climb the slope. They were the first Allied soldiers to reach the chalet, which was still burning. The French discovered kilometers of underground bunkers housing art looted from all over Europe, as well as thousands of bottles of fine wines, tons of victuals and more unusual items, such as a collection of bras amassed by Göring. The building was not finally destroyed until 1952, when the German federal government had it dynamited to prevent any pilgrimages by nostalgic Third Reichers. The surrounding site has been reforested and now houses a documentation center on the history of National Socialism, as well as a golf course and hotel.
