Battle of Stalingrad
The Battle of Stalingrad refers to the fighting from July 17, 1942 to February 2, 1943, for control of the city of Stalingrad, between the forces of the USSR and those of the Third Reich and its allies. They include the approach to the city by the Axis armies, the urban battles for its conquest from September onwards, then the Soviet counter-offensive, until the encirclement and surrender of the German troops. All this fighting, in and out of the city, lasted just over six months and cost the lives of some 750,000 combatants and 250,000 civilians from six nations, making it one of the deadliest battles in history.

Along with the Battle of Moscow in December 1941 and the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, it was one of the great defeats of the German army and a major strategic turning point in the Second World War. It is remembered for the harshness of the urban fighting, which spared neither civilians nor soldiers, as well as for its psychological and symbolic impact.
