On July 30, 1944, after a forced halt of several weeks, the British VIII Corps attacked the strong German positions south and east of Caumont Le Bois de Mondant (or Lutain), a key defensive position; was held by the 752nd Grenadier Regiment of the 326th German Infantry Division .
The 15th Scottish division, preceded by the 4th battalion (tanks) of grenadiers "Guards", equipped with Churchill tanks, launched the attack.
Lieutenant James Marshal-Cornwall, with his unit's lead tank penetrated Mondant Wood and occupied it, making the first breakthrough on this front. As he handed over his prisoners to the supporting infantry, the 2nd Battalion of the "Gordon Highlanders", he was, near this spot, mortally struck by an enemy bullet.
He gave his life for his country and for the liberation of France.
