Kerviniou Battery
Kerviniou Battery
The fortified structure of Kerviniou is located in the northwest of the Quélern peninsula, better known as the "pointe des espagnols". It is practically halfway between the Cornouailles fort and the Capucins islet, in a defilement of terrain that makes it safe from an enemy coming by sea. The view from the glacis of the former French battery encompasses Camareton the sea, the Pointe du Grand-Gouin, and extends as far as St.Mathieu and the Pointe du Minou on the other side of the Brest Narrows. As part of his defense of the harbor, Vauban built a secondary battery here, albeit well-equipped with artillery. It wasn't until 1882 that the structure was modernized in response to the torpedo shell crisis. An under-rock powder magazine was built in 1890, followed by a battery magazine around 1898. The structure is equipped with 4 24 cm guns model 1870-1881 on central pivot mountings.
The battery of Kerviniou is defiled from enemy view, meaning that beyond the firing parapet of the 24 cm guns, all ancillary installations are enclosed in a span nicknamed "la rue des remparts", a wide trench dug into the rock to ensure the safety of the constructions. This "rue des remparts" is crossed by a narrow railroad track. Each firing position has niches for equipment. An under-rock powder magazine supplies the battery with ammunition, an essential complement to a second concrete magazine called the "battery magazine" located near the firing positions. Easy access for visitors.
